Hamelin: Fisheries Patrol Vessel
Hamelin is a 20 metre aluminium police patrol vessel that plays a vital role in monitoring Western Australian fisheries from Eucla through to the Kimberly. Launched in 2002, she was purpose-built to be a multi-use vessel that satisfied the specific requirements of the Western Australian Department of Fisheries, replacing Baudin (commissioned in 1988).
As well as performing fishing compliance work, she also provides services to the departments research division and to external agencies.
As with other Southerly designed patrol vessels, Hamelin features a large aft deck and stern ramp that allows her to launch, recover and stow her fast response rigid inflatable whilst at anchor or underway.
Hamelin is powered by two MTU marine diesel engines that drive fixed pitch propellers, pushing her to a top speed of 27 knots and allowing her to cruise comfortably at 23 knots. With accommodation for 6 (3 crew, and 3 additional personnel) and 10,000 litres of fuel on board, the range of Hamelin exceeds 700 nautical miles and allows her to spend up to 15 days at sea if required.
