AMG Winyama
‘AMG Winyama’ is the second vessel designed by Southerly Designs and delivered to Argonaut Marine Group.
The new pilot boat, AMG Winyama, operates out of Port Dampier, following on from the original Berkeley pilot boat which has been operating from Fremantle since May 2015.
The Berkeley class, also designed by Southerly Designs, was developed specifically to operate as a safer, more comfortable vessel for transporting marine pilots. The design is longer (19.2 metres) and more powerful than typical pilot boats, making it easier to handle at sea and transfer pilot to ships in heavy weather.
To deliver AMG Winyama quickly, Niche Marine was contracted to fabricate the aluminium hull which was then trucked to Dongara Marine as a bare shell ready for the mechanical installation, fit-out, and addition of the resin-infused composite wheelhouse. This approach achieved a build time of just over seven months.
The use of composites for the wheelhouse results in a very lightweight yet durable cabin that is protected against corrosion issues throughout its life. It also provides insulation from the extreme heat the vessel will experience in the Pilbara.
