KI Ross: Patrol Vessel
KI Ross is a 23 metre aluminium patrol vessel operating out of Gladstone, Queensland. With Gladstone as it’s base, the patrol area for KI Ross extends from the NSW border to Swains and includes inspections of green areas within the Great Barrier Reef and no-entry regions for such vessels as scallop trawlers. The trips undertaken by the vessel are long and routinely include offshore distances between 80 – 100 nautical miles. For this reason she was a purpose-built vessel with habitability and offshore sea keeping capabilities high on the priority list. The resulting vessel, launched in Gladstone in 1999, shares her hull design with renowned patrol vessels Van Diemen (Tasmanian Water Police) and Walcott (Western Australian Department of Fisheries) who had established enviable records of reliability and sea worthiness.
As with other Southerly designed patrol vessels, KI Ross features a large aft deck and hydraulically operated stern gates that allows her to launch, recover and stow her fast response rigid inflatable whilst at anchor or underway.
KI Ross is powered by two Caterpillar marine diesel engines and has been designed with a strong bias to cruising and a relative indifference to increased loads. Twin fixed pitch propellers push her to a top speed of 25 knots and allow her to cruise comfortably at 22 knots, day in and day out. With more than 15,000 litres of fuel and accommodation for 3 crew and extra personnel when the boat is operating in alternate roles, KI Ross is another example of a capable Southerly-designed long-range offshore patrol boat.
